Generative AI, LLMs, and Agents in Plain English

Understand common AI terms without getting too technical.

1 · Scenario Hook

Your company starts mentioning generative AI, LLMs, copilots, chatbots, agents, and automation. It can feel like everyone is speaking a new language. You do not need to become an engineer. You just need to know what each type generally does and where the risks change.

Three Levels of AI Help

The more AI can do beyond talking, the more guardrails it needs.

Learning Artifact
1

Chatbot

Answers and drafts when you ask. Think: talks.

2

Copilot

Helps inside work tools like documents, email, meetings, slides, or spreadsheets. Think: assists.

3

Agent

Can follow a goal, use tools, or complete multi-step tasks. Think: acts.

The more hands it has, the more oversight it needs.

2 · Short Lesson

Understand common AI terms without needing an engineering background.

Generative AI creates new content based on your request. That content might be text, images, summaries, ideas, code, checklists, or drafts. An LLM, or large language model, is a type of AI that works with language. A chatbot is a conversational interface. A copilot usually works inside another tool. An agent may go further by using tools, following goals, and taking multi-step actions.

3 · Memory Hook

Think of AI help in three levels: a chatbot is a smart conversation partner, a copilot is a helper sitting inside your work tools, and an agent is a helper with hands that may take action. The more hands it has, the more guardrails it needs.

4 · Weak understanding

All AI tools are basically the same.

Different tools have different access, strengths, risks, and responsibilities.

5 · Better understanding

Some AI tools only draft text. Others can access work files, summarize meetings, or take actions. I need to know what the tool can see and do.

It focuses on access, action, and risk.

Rule 3: The more AI can access or act, the more oversight it needs.

A drafting tool needs review. A tool connected to company data needs stronger caution. An agent that can take action needs clear limits, approvals, and monitoring.
